PARK invites you to the project Loutering (Purification) of George Meertens, consisting of a book presentation and a short exhibition during the Christmas period. The opening of the exhibition and the book presentation will take place on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 8 pm. Rebecca Nelemans will be in conversation with George Meertens about the book and the nine paintings that are exhibited.
The exhibition shows nine paintings with the connective title Loutering. The series is a whole in which the spiritual path of the Incarnation is depicted in a personal way. The nine paintings form the basis for the book 'Loutering'. The artist asked four writers to use the paintings, each in their own way, as the basis for an accompanying essay. The writer and philosopher Joke J. Hermsen writes in response to the work 'Waiting' about the purifying effect of the work by the experience of time. The monk Guerric Aerden ocso uses the titles of the individual paintings to present his thoughts on the peace of contemplation. Rob Smolders, art historian looks at the work of George Meertens in the light of sensuality as we find it in Mark Rothko and Paul Cézanne. Finally Rick Vercauteren, director Museum van Bommel van Dam, writes the epilogue, dealing with the practice of the painter and describing the original work 'Naar het hart van de dag', also part of the book.
The special book is published in an edition of 50 copies, each containing an original work on paper. For more information or ordering: loutering@georgemeertens.com.
