A G is a short film, a tribute and a poetic portrait of visual artist André Geertse, told through images of his studio and the titles of his works. The film was made by am_kopper (Theo Crijns).
.
André was born in Vlissingen in 1959; he studied in Middelburg, The Hague and Tilburg, lived in Den Bosch and worked in Tilburg. He passed away in August 2025 and was buried in Domburg. His work is abstract and characterised by layering, repetition and an attention to light and space.
Following André’s death, the idea arose spontaneously to film the studio in Kuiperstraat before it was cleared. The studio is the artist’s natural habitat. An environment where creating is not the only activity, but where observing and contemplating are just as important.
The film lasts 38 minutes and was recorded in André’s studio on two different days in October 2025.
The title of one of his works, NO CONCEPT JUST PLAYFUL CONTEMPLATION, served as the guiding principle for the making of the film. It is a film that demands its own, contemplative kind of attention; a film that seeks to do justice to André, his work and his favourite place in the world: his studio.
Stijn Derwig, André’s friend and ‘upstairs neighbour’ on Kuiperstraat, made a significant contribution to the film with his compositions, which he performed himself. His music adds an extra dimension to the film.
The film will be screened at PARK during the exhibition Wise Up, curated by René Korten. André and René knew each other well; André’s studio was René’s former home.
On this evening, René will welcome the visitors. Lucia Geertse will give a short introduction focusing on the personal aspect: who her father André was and what his relationship with his studio was like. After the screening, am_kopper (Theo Crijns) will provide an explanation of the film, during which questions can also be asked.
