SGOU

exhibition Tom Claassen, Jasper van der Graaf, Chantal Rens
14.09 2024 - 15.02 2025

SGOU is a new initiative of PARK in cooperation with Schouwburg Concertzaal Tilburg. SGOU focuses on organising two major presentations per year at different locations within the Schouwburg. These presentations combine contemporary visual art with the unique architecture of the Schouwburg, creating a dynamic interaction between art and environment.

PARK is a platform for contemporary visual arts and offers a stage to regional, national and international artists at its location at Wilhelminapark in Tilburg. By collaborating with various cultural institutions such as Schouwburgconcertzaal Tilburg, PARK strives to increase the visibility and functionality of visual arts in the city and region.

SGOU's first presentation will feature works by Tom Claassen (Heerlen, 1964), Jasper van der Graaf (Dordrecht, 1975) and Chantal Rens (Etten-Leur, 1981). All three artists create works that transform the space they are in and engage in a dialogue with the viewer.

Tom Claassen's monumental sculptures, such as the iconic elephants along the A6 motorway and the seated figures at Schiphol Airport, integrate playfulness and simplicity into their surroundings, creating a captivating interaction with the space and viewers, while remaining rooted in traditional sculpture.

Jasper van der Graaf engages in a dialogue with architecture through his abstract compositions that combine tight surfaces, elastic lines and dynamic structures. These elements complete and enhance the space like a customised tattoo.

Chantal Rens' analogue collages play with the viewer's perception and expectations by recombining everyday objects and images in a playful and sometimes disturbing way. Her works evoke wonder and invite the viewer to open up to the unusual, thereby enable a new interpretation of the environment.

The opening will take place on Saturday 14 September at 11.30 am. The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of Schouwburg Concertzaal Tilburg.
